PHOENIX — A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting near 52nd Street and McDowell Road Saturday afternoon.

Officials say the incident started at about 2 p.m., when police received multiple calls regarding a fight that turned into a stabbing near 44th Street and McDowell Road. During that incident, a man was stabbed and taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

After leaving the scene of the stabbing, the man was confronted by police near 52nd Street and McDowell Road.

Police say after officers gave the man commands, he yelled back at officers and continued to walk away, weaving in and out of oncoming traffic.

One officer attempted to pepperball the man, and another officer shot him. Police say the man had an object in his hand, but have not specified what that object is.

The man was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

He has since been identified as 37-year-old Alton Tungovia.

Police say no officers were injured and there is no threat to the public.

Police are also investigating another fight the man may have gotten into between the stabbing incident and the time of the officer-involved shooting.

No further information has been made available.

This incident remains under investigation.
